The Big Book Club Getaway!

This past weekend was the first annual Big Book Club Getaway at Mohegan Sun here in Connecticut. As a book lover and writer, I have to admit that this event caught my attention as soon as I heard that we would be working and sponsoring it. I got to work with Colleen and Sue, the organizers of the event, firsthand, and they were both wonderful to interact with leading up to the big weekend. After weeks of preparation, we finally were off to Mohegan Sun to set up and meet lots of writers and book lovers.

We got there super early on Friday to make sure we were able to set up with plenty of time. We were also able to add an extra table so that we could spread out all six different titles we were giving away. I was especially excited when one of my co-workers arrived with the tall banner on Friday evening. That is my pride and joy since I designed it, and it turned out even better than I could have imagined!

On opening night, Amy Newmark, our publisher and one of my bosses, was the keynote speaker. Her speech was absolutely wonderful, and she did a great job. We were also able to surprise her with a proclamation made by the state of Connecticut honoring the brand's 20 year anniversary.  Friday night, we didn't get to bed until about midnight because we had a team dinner that wasn't until after 9, when the event ended.

Saturday was a super long day that started before 8AM and didn't end until after 6PM. Even though, we were exhausted by the end, I had bonded with one of my coworkers. Fortunately, or unfortunately, we can look at each other without saying anything and know what the other is thinking.

I don't know if I could pick a favorite part, but if I had to narrow it down, I would pick my top three. 1. Amy's speech and surprising her with the proclamation; 2. Meeting Leeza Gibbons; and 3. Getting to meet all the readers of our books and hear their stories.

Personally, I think it's really cool to get to meet the faces behind brands. If you don't already, check out Chicken Soup for the Soul's Facebook page and Twitter account. And if you're a writer, like me, which I know a bunch of you are, check out the story submission page on the website about upcoming book topics!

Amazing, amazing, amazing! So awesome you are right where you belong: in the presence of other authors. Leeza Gibbons seems sooo nice. Tell me everything.
